unexpected blessing

You saw me looking around for company and told me I could talk with you.  Our conversation skipped past shallow questions.  You went straight for my heart.  Patiently you waited, wading past my superficial answers until you uncovered truth.  "What is life?" you asked.
     I answered "Jesus."
You probed deeper, "How do you show Jesus' light?"
I answered with the first word that popped into my head; "Love."
"There," you said leaning in "that's the gospel, honey."  And in that moment you, an elderly homeless man with a white matted beard, kind eyes and a quiet voice, revealed to me something years of church-going never did; I didn't need to be a preacher or even a good witness to spread the gospel, I just needed to live a life of love.
